Johannesburg, October 2007 – Shake It is the energetic new single taken from Gang of Instrumentals’ (GI) second album Salute. The single follows hot on the heels of the album’s first number one hit single My Number One, which has been dominating radio airwaves for much of this year. GI’s Tumi ‘Lady Naturelle’ Masemola, Mandla N ‘Pimville Spokesman’ and Bongo Riot have, with this massive hit single, established themselves as a dazzling jewel in the crown of South African music.
Breaking the mould of pop urban music, the stylish band is fusing soul and hip hop with a distinct reggae feel, experimenting with the afro-funk genre to create a sound which is distinctly GI. Building on the success of their first album Kassi Flava which was nominated for two Channel O awards, Salute reaches even greater heights, captivating its listeners in a web of mellifluous sound.
In Shake It, catchy lyrics – “shake it like you just don’t care” – combine with ‘Lady Naturelle’s’ sassy voice, Mandla N’s instinctive feel for rhythm and beat and Bongo Riot’s distinct reggae vibe to create what is certain to become the next number one hit. Renault Mégane is also shaking to the beat of GI; the latest advertisement for this distinctive car features the Shake It soundtrack. The Renault Mégane Shake it!, like GI itself, is unique, stylish and fresh, an equivalence that made the band happy to link their image to that of the car. It is all about attraction; as the words of Shake It urge: “hug me, kiss me and caress me.”
The group’s passion for growing the South African entertainment industry has been affirmed with GI’s latest album Salute, and its aspirations to compete in the international market will soon become a reality with this hit single Shake It. GI is a shining star in the South African firmament, a light destined, in due course, to be cast over the rest of world.
